Image Compressor: Reduce Image Size to a Target KB
Updated · Free · No sign-up · Runs in your browser
Need a photo under 200KB for an application form, or under 100KB for an email or website? Type the size limit, add your images, and the compressor finds the highest quality that fits.
Each result shows the real file size and the pixel dimensions, so you know it meets the limit before you download it. Images are processed in this browser and are not uploaded.
Your images are never uploaded. They are compressed only in this browser on your device and are not stored anywhere. Built with open-source MozJPEG, libwebp, libavif (jSquash) and pica (licenses).
Location (GPS) and camera details in the photo's EXIF data are removed when the image is re-saved.

Typical size limits and settings that usually fit
Starting points only — every photo compresses differently. The compressor checks the real size for you.
| Limit | Common use | Try |
|---|---|---|
| 50KB | Some passport-style photo and exam portals | JPG, longest side 600px |
| 100KB | Online forms, email signatures | JPG, longest side 800–1080px |
| 200KB | Job and school applications, marketplaces | JPG or WebP, longest side 1280px |
| 500KB | Website and blog images | WebP, longest side 1920px |
| 1MB | Sharing full photos by email or chat | JPG, longest side 2560px |
Worked examples
4.2MB phone photo → under 200KB
- JPG, longest side 1280px
- Quality searched automatically
→ about 150–200KB, still sharp on screen
Screenshot with text → under 100KB
- WebP keeps text clearer than JPG at the same size
→ choose WebP, longest side 1080px
Limit too small for the dimensions
- Lowest quality is still above the target
- Dimensions are reduced step by step
→ the result notes that the image was made smaller to fit
Already small image
- Re-saving would make it bigger
→ the result tells you to keep the original
How to compress an image to a specific size
- Choose "Target size" and pick 50KB, 100KB, 200KB or type your own limit in KB.
- Choose the format (JPG works everywhere) and the maximum longest side in pixels.
- Add up to 20 images and press Compress.
- Check the size shown for each image, then download one or all.
How the target size is reached
File size depends on the number of pixels and the compression quality. The compressor tests qualities between 10 and 95 with a binary search (up to eight encodes) and keeps the highest one that fits your limit. If even the lowest quality is too big, it shrinks the image by 20% and tries again, up to six times.
Sizes use 1KB = 1,024 bytes, the way Windows and most upload forms count them. Re-saving also removes the photo’s EXIF data, including GPS location and camera details, and keeps the image the right way up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image to 200KB?
Choose "Target size", pick 200KB, add the image and press Compress. The result shows the exact size; if the form also has a pixel limit, set the longest side too.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs in this browser. The page only downloads its compression code from this site; your images, file names and results are not sent anywhere.
Which format should I choose?
JPG for forms and email because every system accepts it. WebP gives smaller files for websites. AVIF is smallest but slower and not accepted everywhere.
Why did my image get smaller in pixels?
If the lowest quality still exceeded your limit, the image was scaled down until it fit. Choose a larger target or a smaller longest side to control this yourself.
Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos?
Most browsers cannot open HEIC. Set your iPhone camera to "Most Compatible", or share the photo as JPG first, then add it here.
Is there a file size limit?
Up to 30MB and 50 megapixels per image, and 20 images at a time. Large batches can be slow on phones, so add a few at a time.
