Worked examples
72 °F to °C
- (72 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
→ 22.22 °C
350 °F oven to °C
- (350 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
→ 176.7 °C
37 °C body temperature to °F
- 37 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32
→ 98.6 °F
25 °C to Kelvin
- 25 + 273.15
→ 298.15 K
Fahrenheit to Celsius formula
- Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature.
- Multiply the result by 5.
- Divide by 9. Example: (68 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 20 °C.
To go the other way, use °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15, and 0 K (absolute zero) is the coldest possible temperature.
Quick mental estimate
For everyday weather, subtract 30 from °F and halve it: 70 °F → (70 − 30) ÷ 2 = 20 °C (exact: 21.1 °C). For °C to °F, double it and add 30. The shortcut drifts at very hot or very cold temperatures, so use the converter for cooking and medical readings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the formula to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For example, 50 °F − 32 = 18, and 18 × 5 ÷ 9 = 10 °C.
Is 98.6 °F a normal body temperature?
98.6 °F equals 37 °C, the traditional average. Normal readings vary by person, time of day and where the temperature is taken; 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher is commonly treated as a fever.
What is 350 °F in Celsius for baking?
350 °F is 176.7 °C, usually rounded to 175–180 °C on oven dials (gas mark 4).
At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius equal?
At −40 degrees: −40 °F = −40 °C.
How do I convert Celsius to Kelvin?
Add 273.15. Water freezes at 273.15 K and boils at 373.15 K at sea level.
What temperature does water boil at in Fahrenheit?
At sea level water boils at 212 °F (100 °C) and freezes at 32 °F (0 °C).
