    • (70 − 72 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40

    → 67%

Final grade formula

Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight written as a decimal (20% = 0.20).

If the answer is above 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit. If it is 0% or less, you already have the grade secured.

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

  1. Enter your current grade as a percentage (check your gradebook or syllabus).
  2. Enter the passing grade — often 60% or 70% — as the target.
  3. Enter the final exam weight from the syllabus. The result is the minimum score to pass.

If two or more tests are still to come, use the weighted grade calculator: leave those scores blank and it shows the average you need across all remaining work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Required score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. For a current 85%, a target of 90% and a final worth 20%, you need (90 − 68) ÷ 0.2 = 110%.

What if the result is over 100%?

Then the target cannot be reached with the final alone. Ask whether extra credit, dropped scores or curves apply, or set a lower target.

Where do I find my current grade and the final weight?

Your current grade is in your online gradebook. The final exam weight is in the course syllabus, usually listed as a percentage of the total grade.

Does my current grade include all assignments?

It should be your grade on everything except the final. If some work is still ungraded, use the weighted grade calculator to include it.

Which letter grade scale is used?

The common US 10-point scale with plus and minus (90 A-, 93 A, 97 A+). Your school may use a different scale, so compare with your syllabus.

Are my grades saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
