Worked examples
$100 bill, 18% tip
- 100 × 0.18
→ $18.00 tip, $118.00 total
$108.25 incl. $8.25 tax, 20% on pre-tax, 3 people
- tip = 100 × 0.20
- total ÷ 3
→ $20.00 tip, $42.75 each
$87.40, 15%, 4 people, rounded up
- 100.51 ÷ 4 = 25.13 → 26
→ $26.00 each (actual tip 19%)
How to calculate a tip
- Multiply the bill by the tip percentage (18% = 0.18).
- Add the tip to the bill for the total.
- Divide the total by the number of people to split it.
Quick mental math for 20%: move the decimal one place left and double it. $46 → $4.60 × 2 = $9.20.
Tip calculator before tax: which is correct?
Etiquette guides commonly suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small — on a $100 meal with 8% tax and a 20% tip, it is $1.60.
How much to tip
Customs differ by country and service. In the United States, 15–20% is common for table service at restaurants. In many other countries service is included or tips are smaller — follow local custom.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20, or move the decimal point one place left and double it. A $45 bill gets a $9 tip.
Should I tip before or after tax?
Many etiquette guides say before tax, but either is common. Tick "Tip on the pre-tax amount" and enter the tax to calculate it that way.
How do I split the bill with a tip?
Enter the number of people. The calculator divides the total including tip, and can round each share up to a whole dollar.
What does rounding up do to the tip?
Rounding each share up adds a little extra, which goes to the tip. The calculator shows the actual tip percentage after rounding.
Does it work with any currency?
Yes. The numbers work for dollars, euros, pounds or any currency; just ignore the symbol.
Is anything stored?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and does not save your bill.
